Barnwood C of E Primary School Curriculum Design

EYFS to Year 6

At Barnwood C of E Primary School, we pride ourselves on offering an inclusive environment where all children regardless of ability, background, challenge or need are supported to meet their full potential. The well-being of the child is at the fore front of our practices and provision and we are committed to developing the child as a whole; academically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. We aim to provide a curriculum, starting in the early years, that fosters a positive attitude to lifelong learning and is driven by our core vision of ‘loving our neighbour and working together to be the best we can be, for the good of all’.

Our teaching and learning philosophy is based on an engaging, challenging and creative approach to the 2014 National Curriculum, offering depth and breadth. We believe in a curriculum model where pupils’ key knowledge and skills are developed across different subjects, themes and opportunities and that through rich and exciting experiences we are able to inspire curious minds that explore possibilities and want to know more.

We have reviewed the design of our curriculum in order to ensure it continues to deliver a high quality education from EYFS to Year 6 that equips our pupils for a successful future in modern society. We will continue to reflect on our vision and values so they give strength to our endeavours. We also pay particular attention to the theories about how children learn and ensure we have a curriculum where;

  • learning is creative, fun and engaging
  • learning experiences produce high quality outcomes
  • children are active participants of learning not passive observers
  • first-hand experiences are used to give learning dimension
  • language development is prioritised and attention paid to the tiers of vocabulary – generalised and subject specific.
  • knowledge and skills are progressively built upon
  • meaningful links are made
  • knowledge and skills are applied across different subjects and contexts
  • maths and English are further developed through other curriculum areas
  • lines of enquiry are driven by children’s interests
  • local resources are fully explored and utilised
  • all members of the school community are viewed as learners, not just the children.

Through designing a curriculum that offers academic enrichment, we also strive to develop the child as a learner so they are fully prepared for the next steps in their education and future adult life. We want our learners to be;

  • ambitious and responsible
  • confident and persistent
  • independent and resilient
  • inspired and curious
  • brave and bold
  • collaborative and cooperative
  • virtuous and giving
  • believing and achieving

All members of the school community have worked together to shape the design of Barnwood’s curriculum and work hard everyday to ensure its implementation meets its intent and has the desired impact for our children.
