Here at Barnwood, we fully understand that children can only learn well if they feel happy and secure both at home and in school. We know from experience that with outstanding pastoral care, children feel they belong, feel safe and their self-esteem flourishes. We also recognise that some children face life challenges that detract from their ability to engage with learning. This may also cause them to struggle to fit in socially. As a ‘Trauma informed School’ we have adopted the Nurture principle that ‘all behaviour is communication’ and we recognise that some children have difficulty using words to explain how they are feeling, resulting in their behaviour being misinterpreted as ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’. These children require greater support, patience and understanding from the whole school community as we help them to increase their emotional literacy and learn to overcome the difficulties they face.
As a staff, we all play a part in supporting the social and emotional well-being of our children. Our dedicated Inclusion Team extends this offer by delivering pastoral support to children, their families and the teaching staff.
