At Barnwood we believe CPSHE helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and become informed, articulate, active, responsible citizens.
We want all pupils, from EYFS to Year 6, to develop their understanding of themselves as individuals, their role within the community and as members of the wider global community. They learn to recognize their own worth, work well together to be the best they can be and become increasingly responsible for their own learning.
They reflect on their experience and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
Barnwood is committed to the promotion of pupils' personal and social development, health education and citizenship. We aim to equip children with the necessary skills to:
- make good choices about their lifestyles
- care for their emotional and physical health and well-being
- make a valuable contribution to the community in which they belong
- develop a positive image of themselves and others
- managing risk and change
- managing opportunities of developing their own talents and personalities
- live as independent, self-motivated members of the community
- respect and care for the physical environment around them.
School based learning opportunities include discussion and debate, role play and question and answer sessions. Circle Time sessions occur in each year group which provides a group listening system for enhancing children's self-esteem and opportunities for talking about 'difficult situations'.

Healthy Relationships Education (HRE)
The school aims to promote the positive self-image of each individual so that they respect themselves and others and are, therefore, able to make positive choices.
Drug Education
In KS1 pupils are taught about safe and healthy lifestyles including the safe use of medicines.
Units of work in KS2 include; Managing Risk, Physical Effects of Drugs and Confidence and Assertiveness.
We have annual visits from the ‘Life Ed’ van which explores many of these areas using an interactive and engaging approach.
Mini Police
In partnership with Gloucestershire Constabulary we are running a Mini Police Programme with our Year 5 Class.
Mini Police is an innovative police engagement programme, which is starting to be delivered in schools with the support of local Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs). The scheme provides a fun and interactive way to introduce children to a positive experience of policing and to get them involved in the local community.
Our mini police representatives, wearing their mini police uniforms, attended a special ceremony at Gloucestershire Police Headquarters where they made their ‘promise’ in the format of a Police Attestation.
The PCSOs will work with our Year 5 children over the academic year and train our mini police too!
