At Barnwood C of E Primary School, we believe that a quality Geograhy curriculum should inspire our children to foster a curiosity about the world around them, a deeper understanding of their local community, the wider world and the language to describe the physical and human processes that occur. Children will become confident in the art of speaking and listening using key vocabulary which they use appropriately and effectively in discussion and use as an effective tool for communication as well as to further their learning.
We aim to provide a Geography curriculum, from EYFS to Year 6, which follows a clear pathway of progression. and fosters a positive attitude to lifelong learning and is driven by our core vision of ‘loving our neighbour and working together to be the best we can be, for the good of all’.
Our Christian values provide a strong foundation upon which to build and St Lawrence Church with our surrounding community of Barnwood are placed at the heart of our school. Children will explore their British values within a multicultural society and how these compares to the wider world around them. Children at Barnwood will develop a deep understanding of the diverse world we live in and understand how their actions, those of others and physical processes can impact on our world both now and in the future.

Geography across the school
Ape to Man
Year 5 and 6 used an aerial map to identify camouflaged pieces of string on our school field as part of our ‘Ape to Man’ topic.
They explored how the Earth’s movements due to tectonic plates and the natural course of erosion exposes fossils embedded in rock.
They also mapped the journey of Charles Darwin to the Galapagos Islands looking at longitude and latitude.
Barnwood Arboretum
KS1 have visited Barnwood Arboretum each term to explore seasonal changes and identify different types of trees.
Glorious Glevum
Following our work on tectonic plates, in our new topic we explored how volcanoes are formed and the different types of volcanoes as part of Glorious Glevum and the book ‘Escape to Pompeii’.
